The hidden world or Armagnac

The hidden world or Armagnac

Today I would like to share with you one of those hidden gems, like perhaps sherry, that due to change in trends or poor publicity get usually overseen by most.  So let me share with you one of those secrets, an amazing product at a relatively low price: Armagnac.

Basically Armagnac is a type of brandy produced in Gascony (France). It has many similarities with Cognac, as it is also distilled from grapes (Baco. Colombard, Folle Blance and Ugni Blanc), however unlike Cognac, Armagnac is distilled twice rather than once, hence having more exposure to wood which helps develop its complexity, aromas and flavours. After distillation, Armagnac is aged in local oak casks, usually for a very long time.

Armagnac is considered one of the first areas in France who started distilling spirits, and in fact is even older than Cognac, although less known.

Although some Armagnacs are vintage dated you will find that most Armagnac is a blend of different vintages. In blended Armagnac, the label indicates the age of the youngest wine in the blend, so you will also be tasting some older vintages included in the blend.

The labelling system includes the following:

VS means the Armagnac has spent a minimum of two years in cask.

VSOP and Reserve mean the Armagnac has spent a minimum of five years in cask.

XO and Napoleon mean the Armagnac has spent a minimum of six years in cask.

Hors d'Age requires ten years or more.

Typically, the older Armagnacs are better, more complex and more expensive, but it's also important to choose Armagnac from a good producer. I recommend the Chateau de Laubade which is being sold by the Wine Warehouse in Vietnam, and it is great.

However the real jewels are the vintage Armagnacs, as you can find really amazing bottles, going back several decades, at really affordable prices. I was introduces to Armagnac by my friend Albin Roux, when he came to a party at my home and brought half bottle of the 1985 vintage, which was absolutely gorgeous. That got me started in the research, and obviously in the tasting.

A few months later the Wine Warehouse made my day as they started bringing a selection of vintages to Vietnam (they currently have in stock vintages going back to 1944) so with my birthday coming around I bought the 1970 and the 1981, which I opened at a dinner at home with some friends to close the evening. Needless to say that the Armagnacs were the star of the night, not only for their age, but for the complexity, aromas and taste.

Apart from crazy people like me that buy d collect spirits and wine, these vintage Armagnacs are a great present to wine and spirit lovers, as you can buy your friends, family and business partners the vintage Armagnac matching their birthday year. For collectors, the Wine Warehouse if offering a free Armagnateque for people buying a minimum number of vintages, but even if you buy a single bottle, you will have a great time enjoying it with and impressing your friends.

As it happens with single malts and bourbon, Armagnac stops ageing once it is removed from its wood casks and placed in glass bottles, at the same time it virtually last forever without losing quality, so you can open it and leave it in the cabinet almost indefinitely. However  when storing Armagnac you should keep the bottle standing up, not lying on its side, since Armagnac will spoil if it comes in prolonged contact with its cork.

Finally for those of you not yet convinced to try Armagnac, you may want to know that originally Armagnac was drunk for medicinal purposes, especially famous was Cardinal Vital du Four, who in the 14th century claimed that Armagnac was therapeutic for 40 different illnesses, just in case you needed another excuse to enjoy this amazing spirit!

Winery review: Chateau Los Boldos (Chile)

Chateau Los Boldos has been present in Vietnam for almost 10 years, and you can find a selection of their wines at the Wine Warehouse.

This winery was created in 1991 with the aim of producing Premium wines from Chile. Its founder envisioned wines that would benefit from century old French winemaking techniques combined with Chile’s terroir potential and ability to produce outstanding wines. Their idea was to do something unique and different.

This dream was materialized in a single vineyard property and winery in Cachapoal Andes region, 100 km. south of Santiago, gathering unique conditions for Chateau Los Boldos to produce its wines.
The vineyard that existed previous to Chateau Los Boldos boosted an amazing opportunity and potential for production of Icon wines due to its old plantations. To name a few, Chateau Los Boldos benefits from a Cabernet Sauvignon parcel planted in 1948 and a Merlot parcel planted in 1959.

In 2008 Chateau Los Boldos became part of Sogrape Family, the largest wine producer of Portugal who became famous for Mateus rose. Seeing the terroir quality and nobility, Sogrape instigated a vast program of reform and investment.

Today Chateau Los Boldos is present in over 40 countries and strives every day to deliver high quality wines to its customers. Quality, sustainability and aim for perfection matched with a passion for wines makes Chateau Los Boldos to continue its quest for more and face the future with excitement and enthusiasm.

Completely renewed in 2012, Chateau Los Boldos winery architecture boosts its Old World heritage and influence.

With a 4 million litre capacity, selection table, temperature controlled stainless steel tanks of 5.000 and 20.000 litres, French and American oak barrels, Chateau Los Boldos Winery gathers all needed capabilities to produce outstanding wines.

The entire winemaking process is conducted with utmost care and every single step is closely monitored by our Winemaker and his team.

Chateau Los Boldos also possesses a modern bottling line with an output potential of 4.000 bottles
per hour, assuring that all our wines are estate bottled under the most appropriate conditions.
The wines’ style is characterised by using French oak mixed with American oak for maturing. The wines are not the typical “big” wines that you would expect from Chile, but wines with more elegance, more acidity and more complexity, giving Customers the opportunity to enjoy French style wines at Chilean prices!

The Chateau Range, the most popular in Vietnam, was the first to be released by Chateau Los Boldos in 1993. From Cuvée Tradition up to Grand Reserve, Vielles Vignes and Grand Cru, wines in this range gather the best of traditional French winemaking techniques and the uniqueness of our terroir.

All grapes are sourced at their own Cachapoal-Andes vineyard and wines are estate bottled. Only French oak is used for the ageing of the Chateau Range and wines reflect the purest expression of each grape varietal, where elegance and complexity prevails.

The icon wine, Amalia, is a new wine boosting with a Shiraz blend. Absolutely gorgeous with just 12.000 bottles being released per year.

The Wine Warehouse recently presented a selection of Chateau Los Boldos wines at Cobalt restaurant in HCMC. An ideal opportunity to enjoy these gorgeous wines, and mingle with other wine lovers.

Tommasi Amarone diner at La Cucina, one of the best Italian wines available in HCMC!

If you like wine, especially if you are a fan of Italian wine, you must try Amarone, one of those gems that was discovered due to an error.

Unlike most of the wine we drink, Amarone is not made with fresh grapes but with dried wines. Amarone was in fact born by mistake and due to famine. The areas where Amarone is made used to be very poor so they used to dry the grapes to trade, which made them in fact the alternative currency. When you dry the grapes around half of the water evaporates and you get a high concentration of sugar.

Apart from being eaten, these dry grapes were also used to produce a sweet young wine, what we could call a sweet version of Amarone. However someone decided to keep the wine a bit longer in the barrels and they discovered that rather than sweet, the wine transformed into something dry and bitter, hence the name “Amarone” from the Italian word amaro which means bitter.

At the end of the 60’s Amarone started to become popular and it was officially named Amarone de la Vapolicella, as Vapolicella, situated between Verona and lake Garda, is the only area in the world allowed to produce Amarone.

Amarone is traditionally made in big barrels (65 to 85 hectolitres) made of slavonian wood, chosen to preserve the wine’s own flavours without adding any vanilla or wood taste.

Perhaps the most famous producer of Amarone wine is the Tommasi family who recently presented some of their wines with the Wine warehouse, their official distributor, in HCMC with a wine dinner at La Cucina in District 7.

Tommasi is one of the main Amarone ambassadors. Tommasi is a family business which has been making wine since 1902 and it is now on its 4th generation of family wine makers.

Although they started growing vines in just a few hectares, over the years they have acquired 195 hectares of vines in different states, 100 of which are dedicated to Amarone and Valpolicela wines, with 15 hectares used to produce delicious prosecco.

As they own all their vineyards, Tommasi concentrates in producing quality rather than quantity, delivering wines with balance and elegance.

Amarone wines are made mostly out of Corvina, Molinara and Rondinella grapes, which are partially dried, in the case of Tommasi for around 100 days. By law wines then have to be aged at least 2 years in barrels, although Tommasi keeps them for a minimum of 3 years, aiming at even better quality, and released only when they are ready to drink, although these wines keep evolving and are usually good for twenty to twenty five years.

We had the pleasure of starting the dinner with a glass of prosecco (Italian sparking wine), which was light and crispy, to be followed by the Le Rosse Tommasi Pinot Grigio, a fresh and light white wine, ideal pair for the fresh hand made burrata cheese which was served with.

The Tommasi valpolicella classic, a fresh red wine full of fruit flavours, followed paired with risotto and grilled swordfish; and then the star of the night, the Amarone classico was perfectly paired by chef Ruben, with parpadella and scaloppini.

The dinner was finished with dessert and a glass of beautiful Grappa di Amarone. A beautiful dinner with amazing wines, which you can enjoy from any of the Wine Warehouse retail outlets.

These wines are very elegant, and if you are patient enough keep some bottles for a  few years and see how the same wines from young and vibrant to old and wise, the current vintage of Amarone classic is 2010, but soon the 2011 will be delivered, so if you want to try the 2010 hurry up before all is gone!
